Why work for a family business?

Family businesses hold a special appeal for many professionals. Based on our colleague Lise’s recent LinkedIn post on the benefits of working for family-owned companies, we were inspired by the wealth of comments, insights, and personal anecdotes that followed.

At The Ownership Company, we are committed to supporting family business owners in achieving “good ownership” through wisdom and knowledge. In this article, we will revisit the benefits highlighted in Lise’s post, incorporate additional insights from the LinkedIn community, and share observations from our own experience working with owners of family businesses.

The unique appeal of family businesses

Around 70% of all businesses worldwide are family-owned. While working with them shares similarities with businesses of other ownership types, there are several traits that make the culture and collaboration within family businesses unique and rewarding.

Stability for the long term. Family businesses typically operate with a mindset focused on sustainability rather than short-term profits. Their emphasis on continuity provides a sense of security for employees. For those seeking a workplace less subject to the volatile pressures of external shareholders, this can be incredibly reassuring.

Balanced performance expectations. Unlike many publicly traded companies that prioritize quarterly earnings, family businesses balance financial performance with long-term goals. This creates opportunities for innovation, strategic investments, and meaningful growth. As one commenter pointed out, families can act decisively and invest in new markets within weeks—a level of agility that larger corporations often struggle to achieve.

Engaged ownership. Working in a family business frequently means collaborating with owners who are deeply involved in the operations. This hands-on approach creates a personal connection between employees and the business. Decisions are often guided by values and a shared vision, which can inspire commitment and purpose.

A sense of care and belonging. Family businesses are known for cultivating environments where employees feel valued and supported. When relationships click, employees may even feel like an extended part of the family. Many organizations in this sector take pride in creating workplaces that emphasize employee well-being. Additionally, family businesses often display a strong responsibility for their local communities, creating jobs for generations, supporting local enterprises, and contributing to regional development.

Pride in the product and legacy. Family businesses are often deeply passionate about their craft, with products or services honed over generations. This pride in their work is contagious, allowing employees to share in the satisfaction of building on a legacy. One commenter noted the “savoir-faire” and pride in producing something of enduring value, which is often part of the DNA of family businesses.

Values-driven leadership. In today’s fast-paced corporate world, leadership guided by strong values is increasingly rare. Family businesses, at their best, embody this ethos. Decisions are often grounded in principles rather than purely profit motives, creating environments where employees feel aligned with the organization’s mission.

Community and responsibility. Family businesses frequently play a vital role in their local communities, creating a ripple effect of positive impact. Whether through providing jobs, supporting local ventures, or acting as community stewards, these companies contribute significantly to their regions.

A nuanced perspective

Of course, these positive attributes depend on the specific family, the business size, the industry, and the local culture. As one commenter rightly pointed out, family businesses are not all the same. Some are a delight to work with, while others may face challenges such as family disputes or governance issues that hinder decision making and progress. It is essential to approach each family business with an open mind and careful evaluation. This variability highlights the importance of good ownership practices. Clear governance structures, defined roles, and a commitment to professional management are key to ensuring that family businesses fulfill their potential as great places to work and value creating entities.
